9.28.18 It’s Friday…but Sunday’s Coming (Extended Edition)

Dear Westminster Family –

This Sunday we are going to focus our attention on the importance of our memories. Our text is Joshua 4:1-24. The children of Israel have successfully crossed over the Jordan River and are ready to begin the conquest of Canaan. God says, “Not so fast…I want you to remember where you have been, how it is you got there, and what difference that will make in your future.” God’s people were instructed to take stones from the River to build memorials that would accomplish those things.

Events in our culture recently should remind us of the power of memory to impact our lives either positively or negatively. As followers of Christ, our most important memories should be those that surface His activity in our past, the reality of His activity in the present, and the promise of His activity in our future.

We live in a culture fixated on the moment. Philosophically, we call this fixation existentialism. An interesting phenomenon in an existential society is the tendency to re-write or re-invent our personal histories to fit our current circumstances. Somewhere in that process, the truth gets misplaced. The experience of the Israelites should prompt us to remember the right things, the truthful things in our lives.

Our planning team has come up with an interesting way for us to “remember” God’s activity in our lives. I am not going to give it away. You need to come and find out 🙂

See you in church.

Pastor Gary
