Dear Westminster Family –
Our lives are filled with transition times. Think about some of those “crossover” experiences in your life. John Huffman lists several of them in his commentary on the Book of Joshua.
“Birth would be one. Some crisis in childhood may be another. Those important decisions we make in our teenage years have that quality. What college should I go to? What career should be mine? Then we tend to settle down, don’t we? A crisis may come. A painful divorce. A financial failure that seriously alters our lifestyle. Or perhaps a financial success that thrusts us into a potentially altered lifestyle.”
He goes on to ask the question that we will ask and answer in the message this week…..”How do we handle crossover experiences and the fear of the unknown that they bring?”
In Joshua 3:1-5:1, the children of Israel find themselves confronted with a crossover challenge. They stand on the edge of the Jordan River. On the other side of the River is the land of Canaan, the land promised to them by God. The Hebrew word “abar,” meaning to “cross over” or to “pass over,” is used 21 times in the story of the crossing. This verb emphasizes the decisive nature of this moment in the history of the Hebrew people and distinguishes it from everything that had gone before. There is a lot that we can learn about our own crossover times by learning from this one.
Also this week…The GAP begins this week on Thursday morning at 6:30 AM in the Fireside Room. This is a weekly bible study available to all men at Westminster. I will be sharing each week from a book entitled, NOT BY SIGHT – A FRESH LOOK AT OLD STORIES OF WALKING BY FAITH.
Also…You may have noticed the offering buckets in the foyer over the past few weeks. Our students have been collecting funds to purchase meal kits from an organization called, “Rise Against Hunger.” The goal is $5000 that translates into 10,000 meal kits to be assembled by our students next Sunday. They have raised a little over $3000. You have been invited to help them reach their goal. I will mention more about this on Sunday. Parents…please note that a Rise Against Hunger participation waiver is required to participate.
