Dear Westminster Family –
“Test yourselves to make sure you are solid in the faith. Don’t drift along taking everything for granted. Give yourselves regular checkups. You need firsthand evidence, not mere hearsay, that Jesus Christ is in you. Test it out. If you fail the test, do something about it. I hope the test won’t show that we have failed. But if it comes to that, we’d rather the test showed our failure than yours. We’re rooting for the truth to win out in you. We couldn’t possibly do otherwise. We don’t just put up with our limitations; we celebrate them, and then go on to celebrate every strength, every triumph of the truth in you. We pray hard that it will all come together in your lives.” (2 Corinthians 13:5-9 The Message).
I love the way Eugene Peterson chose to paraphrase this passage of Scripture. In doing so he reminds us of the importance of regularly evaluating our faith and attempting to measure our growth. These “spiritual checkups” play an important role in making sure we continue to move in God’s direction.
We are calling this coming Sunday at Westminster “Grow Sunday” because we will have the opportunity to examine these things together. Through hearing stories of God’s work in people’s lives and looking at the people and places where we “fit” the steps necessary to grow in our faith will hopefully become clear. There will also be an opportunity after both of our worship services to learn more about some of our ministries and how they are designed to connect us with others as we strive to become more like Jesus.
Also: This Sunday the BAM & Berean classes will meet together at 10:45 in the CLC along with anyone else who would like to attend…to hear Ethiopian, Desta Langena share his story. (In 1998 a group of 10 Ethiopian men was sent to India on a mission trip. Desta Langena was among them…well trained as a physics teacher, then as a missiologist. Desta is a man of prayer who learned to seek God’s face. He would go to the top of a mountain and pray by himself, but soon others followed. Now over 100,000 pray where Desta used to pray alone. Young people began surrendering their lives for missions and this grew into a mission society of over 300 Ethiopian missionaries.)
I hope you will be able to join us. See you in church!
Pastor Matt
