Hey Westminster!

I hope you’re having a great week. I want to start this week’s note with a confession: I used to feel extremely uncomfortable when we came to the end of the year.

No, Christmas doesn’t make me feel that way (If you know me, you know I am really into Christmas). No, it’s also not because I am afraid of the dark (Strangely, I’ve come to enjoy that it’s 4:30 in the afternoon, and it looks like midnight outside).

I’m talking about the fact that during this season, we emphasize year-end-giving. Giving can be a sensitive topic, even at church. And it used to make me feel weird talking about it but it doesn’t any longer.

There are many reasons for this, but I’ll give you two. The first is that I believe giving gives us a fuller understanding of Jesus. The gospel story, the incarnation itself, is one of unfathomable generosity. “The Son of God became a man to enable men to become sons of God” (Lewis). It must follow that a generous gospel, once received, should leave no one stingy. God’s people should be the most generous on the planet, and in doing so, learn more about the character of our savior.

Second, giving is an invitation to joy. Sometimes, we hear the words of Jesus, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35), and don’t know if we believe them. At times, our manner of faith and life might be better summarized: ‘It is more blessed to receive than to give!’ Jesus’ invitation is not meant to guilt or shame us, but to invite us into God’s best. It is transformational when we give God our first and best, no matter how much that may be. We flourish and help the world around us flourish too.

With that, I invite you to pray and consider how the Lord might be leading you as a giver this season. You have two opportunities to give:

1)  “Neighborhoods to Nations” is a special year-end offering that makes a significant impact outside of the church’s walls. This year, our goal is to raise $150,000 with 100% of funds we raise going to outreach.

2) December is an essential month in giving to Westminster’s budget and general fund. Historically, over 20% of our annual giving comes during December. We need your continued faithful giving to continue to pursue a Jesus Transformation as a church.

So, what might that look like for you as 2023 draws to a close? Here’s what Liz and I are going to do. First, we are going to pray. Second, we are going to talk about it with each other. Then, we will commit and give a special gift to our general fund and an above-and-beyond gift to our Neighborhoods to Nations offering. I encourage you to prayerfully consider joining us in doing the same.

I’m praying for you,
