We are continuing our unit on the persecution of the New Testament church. During this unit, we will be remembering how Jesus suffered and died for our sins. The question for this unit is, “Why did Jesus become human? Jesus became human to obey His Father’s plan and rescue sinners.”  Our memory verse for this unit is Isaiah 53:5 (NIV), “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” Try memorizing the verse as a family. (Preschoolers will memorize the bolded portion.)

This week, we will be in Acts 6-7 as we learn about Stephen, one of the first deacons in the early church, who was arrested and martyred for his faith. We will see how “Jesus told His followers that they would be persecuted—hated, hurt, or even killed—for loving Him. Jesus also said that those who suffer for Him would be blessed. We can face suffering in this life because Jesus suffered first. He died and then rose again, and He is waiting for us in heaven.” We want our children to know that Jesus promised to be with us as we live as his disciples, even when it is hard.
